Gratitude In Business
Some days, like when your coffee got cold too fast, your inbox is too full, your clients are pulling you in 42 different directions, it can be very easy to fall into a miserable trap of complaining and wishing the day away. If morale is low, so is your confidence, creativeness, and personality.
How do we avoid getting stuck in this trap? By practicing mindfulness and gratitude. Stay with me here, it’s easier than it sounds. Here are some super simple steps to turn your day around, thus improving your engagement, productivity, and happiness.
Do you have a smart watch that reminds you to breathe? Stop dismissing it. Even taking one minute to sit quietly and breathe can help reduce stress and increase mindfulness.
Distractions can add unneeded stress. Avoid that by turning off notifications, time-blocking your tasks, or finishing one task at a time rather than multitasking.
I know it sounds cliche, but pick a time every day (with your hopefully-still-hot-coffee, perhaps?) to write down a few things you are grateful for. I’ve been doing this daily for awhile now, and focusing on just a few positives really does change your mindset for the day.
We play “Hot Seat” a few times a week as a family. We go around the table and each person takes turns saying something they are grateful for in each member of the family. Then we do what we are thankful for in the day we just had. My kids get a kick out of this and I love that it turns our focus outward and reminds us what we love about each other.
Thank a Client
Passing on a simple “Thank you for trusting me with this” or “I really appreciate your business” can be enough to remind you of why you are doing your job in the first place.
On that note, remember your why. There was once a day you were wishing for your first client, and now look where you are! Think about where you started and focus on how far you’ve come. You’ve got a lot to be grateful for!
